What is Ecommerce?

Today, the most prevalent application for a web site is ecommerce. Although a web site can perform any media function, the e-commerce site is the only way a merchant can exchange currency online.

E-Commerce (also written as e-commerce), or Electronic Commerce, is simply the act of conducting business and transacting merchandise on the Internet. Just about any site can become e-commerce, but several important steps are required first.

The following steps will provide some background tips. A summary is available below.

Step 1 - The Product
Step 2 - The Name
Step 3 - Create the Site
Step 4 - Hosting
Step 5 - Merchant Account
Flow of Credit
Step 1 - The Product

The first objective of any ecommerce site is to establish the products and/or services that will be merchandised online. Most people list the products they sell in their actual business. Why not mirror your retail business on the Internet? Above all, keep your selection focused and concise. No one will appreciate visiting a site that offers everything from books to pet food to pictures of the family.

Step 2 - The Name

Next, if you have not already done so, come up with a name (or two) for your domain that singifies your enterprise. Some notes: simplicity, easy to remember (catchy can help), and shorter the better. Also, be aware that by now, most English words have been made into domain names. Catchy terms do work: look at Yahoo, Ebay, Flooz...

When ready with your new name, register a domain name at 25% less than the street price!

Step 3 - Create the Site

Once you have the domain name, it is time to develop the site. Through Monetcorp's technology partner, OMIT, an e-commerce site complete with database support, shopping cart system, cataloging system, full internal search facilities, and of course, merchant payment processing.

Step 4 - Hosting

A site must be hosted on an Internet server for the world to see it. Like leasing office space, hosting creates the environment for the site. Now even the small business netrepreneur can take advantage of the speed, portability, and rich feature set like Netscape, Yahoo, Altavista, and EBay.

Step 5 - Merchant Account

The real power of an ecommerce site! A Merchant Account allows the web entrepreneur to accept credit cards from site customers and process those credit cards in real time with full processor-to-bank automation.

Through WorldPay, our merchant account provider affiliation, we are able to offer quick processing of your Merchant Account application.
